Possibly 2.5 stars rounded up. I listened to the audiobook for some horrible reason. I should’ve known better after Hooked that this one shouldn’t be listened to, especially not in public. I absolutely LOVE the Lion King. It’s one of my favorite Disney movies of all time so I was excited to see Scarred was (loosely) based on that. This just fell short for me. Tristan (aka Scar) is supposed to have this bad boy thrill about him but he is a sick, petty man and I just didn’t find him attractive at all. The writing was great but the “love story” just can’t be described that at all. It’s a lust story at best and even that is just really effed up. There’s no love story build up between Sara and Tristan meeting and somehow ending up in the smutty scenes between them. It just fell flat for me. Maybe I liked Hooked better since it was based in current timelines rather than mid-evil times like this one. I’d read more in this series but I don’t think I’m going to have as high of expectations like I did for this one.

Oh. My god.
This book is based on Disney’s classic The Lion King which is a furry version of Hamlet. This book is a bastardization of both with gratuitous violence and death.

“But it’s a dark romance!,” you say. “It’s supposed to be fucked up!” You say.

There was no real romance to this. Tristan is pathetic and kills people to deal with it. Sara is a pawn who kills people because she thinks she’s going to get revenge.

But then after they murder everyone and sacrifice their followers that, at least Tristan, look down on in disgust, Tristan gives the thrown to Simon? In what world does that power hungry miserable sod give up a kingdom that he convinced everyone that he didn’t burn down.

Anyway, I’m all for a red flag hero, but good LORD, this man had no redeeming qualities. Apparently he was good at sec, but she was a virgin, so she doesn’t know.

Disturbed but in a good way, I guess? I made the mistake (or good decision?) of listening to the audio of this one. The male audiobook reader is PHENOMENAL but the FMC voice took some getting used to. If fire is your thing, you might be into this one. The Lion King tie-in is the best touch. Make it extremely explicit and dark and that about sums up this one

The sex is great, but takes a while to get there.
The twists!
Most importantly, the love is so, so beautifully written. Honestly, all the emotions are beautifully written.
