The descriptions of all the Japanese characters are horrendously racist. They read like the book actually was written in the 1880's.
The main female character is quite misogynistic. She has a severe case of, "I'm not like other girls".
I thought there might be some character development that adressed these things, but nope.

There were things I liked. The descriptions of the clockwork were beautiful. The plot was engaging- particularly the last two thirds. Despite enjoying parts of the book, I won't be reading the sequel or Natasha Pulley's other work. One racist book was enough for me.

How could I NOT love this?
A watchmaker surrounded by coincidences. A telegraph operator who should be dead. A physicist on the brink of understanding. A mechanical octopus hell-bent on stealing your socks.
Delightfully whimsical to its very soul. I search far and wide for books that make me feel this way, I am so happy to have found Natasha Pulley. I read a short story of hers involving these characters in an anthology recently and I instantly bought the rest of her books.

I don't know that I can put into words how much I love this book. It is such a beautiful dichotomy, underpinned by the intrigue surrounding a violent event yet filled with whimsy and heartbreakingly poignant moments. I adored it the first time I read it but coming back to it having read The Lost Future of Pepperharrow, with the extra depth that gives to the characters, made it a truly special experience. Towards the end there was a genuine ache in my chest at the thought of leaving Filigree Street behind, it truly is one of those books that feel like coming home in way. You should read this book.

I still lay in bed thinking about Mori's journal entry and that roulette wheel. A one in thirty seven chance...
