Anna Strong used to hunt the undead now she is one of them. She is trying to hunt down the rogue vampire who turned her. She also has two men in her life, one human and one Night watcher.

It's pretty predictable, fun, but predictable.

Argh, this was just too dreadful, I couldn't get further than halfway. A really awful I-just-got-turned-into-a-vampire story. Honestly, the heroine meets a vampire who says he's going to guide her in the ways of vampires, blah blah blah, she falls in bed with him, wakes up the next morning thinking, "Woops! What about my boyfriend?" Then Mr Hunky Vampire walks past again and all thoughts of boyfriend disappear off the page as they leap into bed together. I didn't believe in this character at all - it's all too ridiculous. And Mr Hunky Vampire makes me want to gag, he's so sickening. Truly dreadful.

This book was just weird from start to finish. I have read approximately a bajillion vamp/werewolf type books and series, and usually each one has a certain element in the mythology that makes them stand out. There is just NOTHING that makes this series stand out. Not the lead character, not the secondary characters, not the plot. Nothing. Nadda. El zippo. Oh actually, there is one thing....the fact that the writing style drives me insane! It's written first person POV, present tense: " I look for my keys", "I get in my car", " I grab my gun", "he reaches for me". It's just a little thing, but it reeeeeally got on my wick. And the sex scenes are neither here nor there. I mean, either do the fade-to-black thing and don't tell us anything- fine by me, or give us the details, but don't do this in-between thing. It gives the impression it was all over in 2 minutes which doesn't look good for your leading males!

What I Did Like:
+The voice is great! Right from the Foreword (which I blindly read in the store and loved, which led to buying this one knowing nothing else about it) I was into the way the story is told like the MC is talking to you.
+I like some of the differences between other vampire legends/stories and this one. I found it interesting.
+I liked the mystery built into the story. You spend some of this book trying to piece together clues and figure out what happened and you get the satisfying reveal as well!

Who Should Read This One:
-Vampire fans. This takes a great first-hand look into the life of a recently turned vamp and puts a good spin on the tale.

My Rating: 3 Stars

Anna is a bounty hunter who is raped and turned into a vampire. Her doctor Avery takes her under his wing to help her adjust as he is also a vampire. Bad things keep happening to Anna and she is sure that her sire is out to kill her, and when her partner David goes missing, things get a whole lot worse.

As heroines go, Anna can be a bit frustrating but I found her pretty likeable on the whole. As always she was slow to except the truth about being a vampire which always bugs me in books but that is just a personal gripe! Her life is in a mess and you can understand her being a bit confused about things though her morals take a back seat as she jumps into bed with Avery despite continually declaring her love for her boyfriend Max. She does do some stupid things though so I get why a lot of people didn't like the book.

The plot itself was interesting though I didn't like the way Anna kept thinking that she was more of a participant in the rape than a victim. I don't like that implication. I'm also not convinced that she would be jumping into bed with Avery so soon after a traumatic sexual attack, especially when claiming to love her boyfriend. I found David to be very annoying as well, acting as if Anna was his personal property and shouting the odds, trying to force Anna to do what he thinks is right. He may be a concerned friend but acting just as childishly as Avery in their alpha male pissing contest was really annoying and gave me a headache. Max was just as possesive and irritating.

*SPOILER*
I was suspicious of Avery from the start though I was unsure where her sire fit into the picture. Avery was too smooth and slimy for my liking and I did think it was a bit obvious that Avery was not the good guy, especially after the trip to Mexico and his determination that Anna forget all about David and give him up as lost. Curious about who Casper is going to be as well. I was extremely happy to see Avery get what was coming to him. Scumbag. I never liked him at all. There was enough in the book to keep me curious about what Anna was going to do next so I will give book 2 a go at some point.

This was a humdingah read. Anna Strong is a PI in San Diego, one of my favorite cities. She and her partner are after a bail jumper and things go terribly wrong. She wakes after the jumper attacks her and finds life as she knows it is changed forever. She is now a vampire. It just gets more interesting after that. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
