What a romp!  Such a joy to read with the same group that read A Pursuit of Love, we came across many of the same characters.  Mitford does such a great job plotting out the personalities and proclivities of the wealthy upper classes in early twentieth century UK.  They are so far removed from my world today, that all their foibles are like eating a pack of your favourite sweets without any of the calories.  I’m just sorry there isn’t a third book with the same characters.  Although I have bought an 8 book collection of Mitford’s work, so it is lovely to have these to hand whenever I need a pick up.

I read this mostly at work (shhhhh) which is why it took so long. This is told in Fanny's voice, and takes place in her girlhood and the early days of her marriage while she is living at Oxford. Polly Montdore, an aristocratic beauty, grows up, lives in India, and when she comes back she has her debut but shows no interest in marrying anybody. She finally does get married but it's so scandalous she is disowned from her ancestral home and her inheritance. The heir to the Montdore estate and fortune, Cedric, comes to live with Polly's parents and makes his mark on their society. I enjoy Fanny's voice and the characters. Do admit!
