Aaaaagh, I spend so much of the time reading this book ANGRY! But that's not because of book quality. Or, not in the way you first thing. Smith really lets Phoney Bone take over this volume of the series, allowing him to run his biggest con ever, all at the expense of the dragons, whom we have barely seen but know to be good. But the bigger victims are the villagers themselves, who turn their idyllic home into a war camp under Phoney's instructions. It's feels all too real, watching this one little man change the very nature of a community from friendly and peaceful to mistrusting and warmongering.
In the background of all this, we learn more of the Thorn storyline, as she comes to grips with the revelations Gran'ma Ben made in the previous book. Suddenly burdened with history and expectations, we watch the lighthearted girl reform herself into something quite different, just as the village itself transforms.
Smith continues to astonish and entertain. Keep going. Keep. Going.

Notes of the binding of isaac, the sacrifice of the lamb, and the decay of morality as it affects civil society. Story is definitely getting darker and more metaphysical, less Calvin and Hobbes
