This is a hard book to critique, as memoirs generally are. I know this book doesn’t quite meet the requirements of this popsugar challenge prompt, but I had listened to this podcast and wanted to read the associated book, so I figured it was a good way to fulfill this prompt. I really enjoyed the podcast. The book not as much.

It’s not because of the story, obviously, the story is the same. But the book felt much more rambling and much less organized than the podcast.

This book tells the tragic story of David Kushner’s older brother, Jonathan. In 1973 Jonathan was murdered in Florida. He was 11 years old. And that killing changed the dynamic and psyche of the Kushner family as well as the Tampa community.

David Kushner uses this book as an opportunity to examine the feelings of that loss. Unfortunately, I feel like the book lacked some depth. And I find that very hard to write because I can’t even imagine how difficult it would be to write about something so personal and the effects that such a tragic situation would have on me. But because the book was written for the purpose of telling his brother’s story and about the effects of the loss, it’s only honest for me to say that I felt the book was lacking in depth of emotion. That doesn’t discount anything about the author or his feelings, but I felt this story was told much better orally than in text.
