It's been a few days since reading this, and I still can't properly digest my feelings. I have no regrets reading this series, but if I had known the ending...I would not have read it. I felt so invested in Luka's character development and his end left me devastated. Maybe if we weren't in the middle of such dark times, I would feel differently. For now, I am leaving this unrated.

“happily, sadly, humanly ever after… yael rider lived.”

once again, great book. solid sequel. really enjoyed it, but didn't quiiiiite live up to the first one for me for the following reasons:

1) action sequences were a bit weaker. i thought the author wrote the racing scenes really well during the first book. this sequel had more hand to hand combat and gunfight scenes. she's not as gifted at writing those. they were still tense and exciting, but she could be kind of vague? so i wouldn't really understand what had happened in some parts? like wait, who's been shot? are they actually dead? where is this person in space?
2) i felt like the flowery writing got a little repetitive in some parts, more so than book 1. her way of formatting inner thoughts (-LIKE WHEN SHE DOES THIS WITH THE DASHES AND BOLDS AND ITALICIZES-) got kind of annoying.
3) i thought the twist at the end (hitler actually being dead, himmler being the ring leader) was really nice, but it fell just a bit flat for me because we hadn't heard enough about himmler. he wasn't a big enough player for me to be really impacted.

things i loved:

1) still really enjoyed the characters. felix, luka, yael. and then we got miriam! loved how she was thrown into the mix. i loved luka's development, even if it felt a little bit rushed at times.
2) the romance between luka & yael, so cute! again, still a bit rushed but I ate that shit up so I looked past it.
3) this book was ACTION. PACKED. you can almost forgive the author for some action scenes falling flat because there were just so many of them. the book took off running from page 1 and didn't stop.
4) the interludes where the author would write a certain day (christmas eve, hitler's assassination, the race) from the POV of felix, luka, and yael.
5) loved that we got all 3 main characters POV chapters this book instead of just yael's like in book 1.

(thank god vlad survived. rip henryka & luka.)

I just, I can't. How dare Felix and the Wolfes get their happy ending when Luka.... I sort of hate this book. It was amazing–so well written–but I hate its guts. Life sucks ass.

Reading soundtrack:
- Sonja's Trial and Execution - Paul Haslinger
- I Forgot Who I Was - Blake Neely
- When She Went Away - Max Richter

"Yael Reider lived"

i am crying; i shouldn't be writing this just as i have finished the book but i am crying and i can't stop.

this was all just beautiful but crushing. i have been crushed and i don't know how to breathe and i don't know why but this was beautiful.

i need time to actually be able to compose myself to write a proper review but for now bask in my tears.

update after like five minutes: i am still crying; i am not over this; why did i choose to read this at two am, this is going to haunt me; luka loweeee; i'm not crying you are; my hair is drenched in my own tears; luka lowe; lions and wolves; c r y i n g
