Such an interesting book, and really well written.
Nice and easy to read popular science book on evolutionary biology of female animals. Lucy is a very funny writer, and finds loads of interesting women scientists to interview.
I couldn’t stop testing my friend all the facts I was learning. I’ve had a few rubbish books in my book club recently so it was nice to have one I actually wanted to read

As I was trying to think about a good quote to highlight this review, there were too many to name, and for good reason: the idea of “what is female” is an incredibly complex topic that I frankly have more questions about than answers after reading this. But that’s a wonderful thing! I loved every chapter of this book. While there was quite a bit of anthropomorphism (in some instances for me, too much), Cooke did an amazing job writing this for a general audience and making it accessible and digestible. It was funny, it was smart, and it was full of fun facts. I especially loved how Cooke made the scientists come to life on the page by showing us their personalities and unique characteristics from the time she spent with them. While this topic is going to be something that is ever evolving, Cooke did an incredible job contributing to the conversation and gave me (and my colleagues) a lot to think about. If you love science or female empowerment (or both!) read this book! 💕 Thank you Lucy Cooke!

I found this book unexpectedly delightful. Definitely one of the most engaging nonfiction works I’ve listened to this year. Cooke’s narration was excellent and I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud while learning. Would recommend this to anyone interested in animals, gender and sexual issues, or just science in general.

Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for this ALC!
