the absolute irony of jane austen saying emma was a character that not many people would like and having her be one of the most loveable austen main characters ever

she likes matchmaking with her friends, she likes drama and gossip she’s actually so real

i dare say it’s my favourite austen work now i enjoyed it a lot

Emma is frustrating, amusing, beguiling, and lovable.

Mr. Knightley is all those things and moreover, he is the one for Emma. The one to challenge her, complement her, and always have her best interest in mind.

One of the most striking quotes from this novel for me is-

“My dearest Emma, for dearest you will always be. I cannot make speeches, Emma. If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am.”

Compelling and funny, Emma paints a great picture of early 19th century England. The annotations were helpful and unobtrusive, but they could be a little hand-holdy when it came to pointing out parts of the plot.
