This book felt misogynist and also had some distasteful offhand comments that turned me off. I also felt like, in the year 2019, why was a book being published that was SO condemning of all things feminine? I was confused about the inclusion of Tyler when it seemed a non-issue, and for all the “I’m not a cheater” talk there was definitely content that veered onto emotional affair territory. After half of the book I felt like I knew where 90% of the plot was going, almost all the tension was gone, and the relationships and humor felt geared towards a high schooler’s understanding of romance and jokes. Not for me.

There were a few things that drove me crazy such as the miscommunication trope and I wish Kristen didn't string along her first boyfriend. I know she was trying to find her happiness with the cards she was dealt, but it doesn't mean you stop using your voice.

However I did love her friendship with Sloan and I loved Josh's friendship with Sloan's fiancee. The found family feeling of the firehouse in general.

The character arcs and growth did take a bit to get there but it when they did, I was proud of them.

The author's note did raise my rating because I feel you deserve to know you are not alone in your diagnoses or journey.

This book was intense in a way I didn't see coming. I won't spoiler it but if you have medical trauma, consider that there's quite a lot of detail given in this book about a serious medical event and it was unfortunately quite close to something I experienced... so while I'm not triggered, it was pretty difficult to listen to and emotionally intense.

I loved the connection between Josh and Kristen but I felt like her steadfast refusal to be with him went on a little longer than necessary... even after they endured a traumatic event that should have been eye-opening, she stuck to her guns and it got a little frustrating.

The HEA ending was lovely for them and yet I would have liked to see it handled differently because it felt like the rug was pulled out from under the entire premise... I'm being vague on purpose so as to avoid spoilers here :)

The characters felt real, natural, and genuine and I loved the banter between the MCs. The writing was good, sometimes intense or suspenseful and emotionally evocative, which kept me listening and made it overall an enjoyable listen.

It was a cute story, but I could have done without the sex and the horribly continuous string of profanity.
