I rated this 3 stars not because I didn’t like it but because I couldn’t give it more than this. Holly Black’s writing was gorgeous as always. The characters were as terrible as ever, but she literally compressed all of Cruel Prince into 50 pages and changed the point of view. It was interesting to read from Taryns perspective, and I am glad I read it but it was nothing original. I liked the storytelling aspects, it was as if we were sitting by a campfire listening to the scary stories of Faery and I loved it. The threads of questioning what is a strong woman and can we respect those who different from as and strong in their own way? Holly Black has somehow made me care about characters who objectively suck and that is some kind of magic.

The Lost Sisters doesn't affect the canon of the main story, but it is, nonetheless, an interesting perspective that answers some questions from book 1.

SpoilerI can't really hate Taryn, not anymore than she hates herself. She is a broken and pitiful girl who is starved of love and her own strength. It's bit obvious-Freudian-daddy-issues, but I'm intrigued by her constant denial. I'm hoping for her redemption... because I love soft girls.... but I won't be too hurt if she doesn't get one.

Everyone survives in their own way, and some are not as noble as others.

A 2h audiobook of normalizing and romanticizing an emotionally abuse relationship. The entire thing is Taryn’s insecurities and never-ending excuses for Locke’s terrible behaviour.

Can we please be clear that being obsessed with someone who is 1% nice and 99% abusive is NOT romance? Taryn is filled with self-doubt and is desperate for anyone to be kind to her. This is not love. This is Locke manipulating her lack of self-worth and purposely making her feel worse about herself so she feels trapped with him.

I listened to most of it on 1.5 speed just to try and get to the end quickly, hoping Taryn eventually changes. But no. The end is even worse. Admitting she feels jealous while blaming herself for someone else’s abuse is not character development, it’s just demoralizing to read. This book just left me with an over abundance of “ick”
