Oh look, a book about the not-so-distant-future of the Tory government :) I think that's what I enjoyed the most out of this; I can actually see how the British class divides could come to this. (FYI, I would be one of those people blocked off and sacrificed to the sea, just saying.) And, there would 100% be a group of people who watch there homes flood and say "ah, it'll be fine in the morning." So blazé but so true.
However, this is a classic case of 'I really enjoyed the premise but I could have done without the romance.' I am not a romance reader. I appreciate the LGBTQ+ representation, but I think it was more to do with Chance's age, I just felt very... Uncomfortable. It would serve to being more of a YA book to me than an adult dystopian. If it was Chance's mum in the relationship, I wouldn't have felt so cringe. I have to admit, I skipped past those parts. Chance just came across too young for me to believe and appreciate those parts.
Great concept and execution; the flowery prose and writing style reminds me of Sophie Mackintosh. But, overall, it wasn't for me.

Brutally depressing but if you’re in the mood for a queer look at dystopia and the climate crisis coupled with poverty, domestic violence, and child rape this is for you (it is actually good! Just depressing as hell)

Read this book for an uni seminar and what I loved most about it was probably the hopelessness. I really liked to read something so realistic without the mindset of “we can fix that, it will get better”. Sometimes you just have to realize that, no, you can’t do anything about it. It is not in your hands and you just have to try and make the best of it.

I found this is some ways very challenging and yet easy to read.

It has really stuck in my head for days after, the characterisation, the location description and the utterly unexpected love story in the middle. Incredibly through provoking and visceral. The almost stream of consciousness writing style took a while to get into, then I flew through the book.

Loses points as I didn’t like the end at all. But that’s me and doesn’t detract from the utter necessity of people to read it, and do everything we can to avoid the future it imagines.

The premise, themes, and setting of this book are really interesting and likely why I stuck with this story for over 400 pages. Otherwise the choppy storytelling, weird pacing, and lack of payoff for some of the major developments made for a disappointing finish
