I was underwhelmed by this if I'm honest but, and it's a big but (if you don't mind me saying) I reckon the next installment of the trilogy will be a corker.
The main problem was that, suffragists aside, there wasn't much peril in this. I've had a bash on To Serve Them All My Days and the beauty of that was that it was a chronicle of such a tumultuous period in British history. Now while Delderfield is clearly a passionate advocate of universal suffrage, that isn't enough, within the bounds he has set himself, to sustain a novel. So while I'll only give this a 3 star review that's not to say it isn't a very fine book, just that there are too many moments of serenity for the lead characters and, as we all know, that isn't a boon for the reader.
This leads me on to the next volume. WWI up to WWII. Well that my friends is surely going to be fantastic?

First book in the author's trilogy set in a small Devon community. I loved this but never read the other two novels.
