A pretty interesting portrayal of Darth Maul's inner conflict.

Often cited as the best thing to come out of 'The Phantom Menace', the athletic Darth Maul has developed quite a bit of a fan following since his debut.

Which Lucasfilm (as was) and Disney/Marvel obviously recognised, with - in the expanded universe - Maul surviving his encounter with and bisection by Kenobi, even - SPOILER ALERT - cameoing in the recent Han Solo prequel movie.

This collection of stories, apparently (or so I've heard) is developed from unused Clone Wars scripts, which might explain how - I felt - it assumed familiarity with events that aren't covered/shown in the movies.

For me, that was a bit of a put-off: since I had no previous connection with most of the characters (apart from the obvious, like Maul himself or The Emperor or Sidious), it's kind of hard to care what happens to them!

Darth Maul is one of my favourite Star Wars characters, so I'm always craving to see or read more about him.
This particular comic seemed a little meh to me.
While the story is very fight- and battle-focused, the art doesn't depict it as dynamic as you'd expect.
Story-wise this won't work well as a standalone read, you need to have at least some 'Clone Wars' background.

Oh my. This is a very intimate story that a Maul fan would definitely like.
Most of the comic is based on Maul's inner dialogue, and this is what made it interesting to me. I've always wondered what this horned little mean fella had going on inside his head.
He's the embodiment of evil and hatred, so impulsive, very dark side.

The art is phenomenal in this book, by heart skipped a beat a couple of times whilst I was reading through fighting sequences panels, especially when Mail rips off his top, sorry

Fear. Anger. Hate.
These mark the steps along the path to the dark side.
These are the weapons of the Sith.
And I have trained to use these weapons well.

I am Darth Maul.

This volume contains all 5 issues of the 2017 Darth Maul Comic Series. It's 3.5 stars for me, rounded up because the last two issues were more interesting.

It also contains the 10-pages comic 'Probe Droid Problem' which actually was quite sweet.

I never was a big fan of Maul but as an introduction to him this series is a nice one to squeeze in. It takes players before The Phantom Menace and young Maul wants to finally test his skill against a real Jedi. But, past, Darth Sidious mustn't know! So what do so? Sneak away and join an auction to get a Jedi Padawan to play with. Special Guest appearance: Cad Bane and his team are on board and I honestly like that space cowboy a lot! That's a plus.

A quick read with excellent art. As an adaptation of an unproduced storyline for the final season of the Clone Wars TV show, I was hoping for a bit of closure, but the ending left Maul's fate open. Still, a good story worth a look.
