The classic science fiction tale of the first trip to the moon. When the brilliant Dr. Cavor teams up with the poor industrialist, Mr. Bedford, they use the discovery of Cavorite to build a sphere which allows them to travel to the moon, Once there, they discover an insect-like race of aliens and must find a way to return to Earth. Influenced C.S. Lewis's book Out of the Silent Planet, traces of Wells' tale can be found throughout the book.

An interesting read, I quite liked the criticism against imperialism and capitalism. Our titular capitalist, Mr. Bedford, not only shuns Dr. Cavor's passion for knowledge but becomes the first man to punch an Alien. The Selenites, a peaceful species native to the moon then gets massacred out of fear, ending with Mr. Bedford abandoning Cavor for the safety of earth and gold.
I find that the explanation of the background of the Selenites shouldn't have been left to the end, as there was so much to unpack and could've built more momentum to the rest of the book. However, the lore behind their culture was quite interesting and the suspense that leads to the fate of Dr. Cavor was well paced.
Overall it's a good short story and it's fascinating to see what science fiction was to readers in the 19th century.
