This book is the most entertaining book of poetry that I have ever read without compromising its intelligence and point of view.
The main premise of the collection is that these are poems written in the perspective of women lying in the periphery of famous stories written by and about men. Circe, Eurydice, Demeter, and even non-greek women like Herod (as Queen) and the Devil's wife are just a few of the titles featured, and they are all brilliantly written.
From the first poem about Little Red Riding Hood, she entertains and intrigues you out the gate with a distinct voice and perspective. Through the collection she explores many issues such as growing up loving literature, independence, parenthood, and she is especially eloquent in themes where a woman's perspective is important: the male gaze, abuse, sexuality, just to name a few. If there's one thing you take away from this review, please please please read Eurydice.
All in all, this book is an A in voice and cynical humor, on top of its strengths in theme and political perspective. I hope the rest of the author's work is just as good.
