I didn’t love it? I wasn’t even expecting anything from it, so it’s not like I was disappointed or anything, but I don’t know... something about this book just didn’t click with me. It was still a good read, I would definitely recommend it and I enjoyed the concept of it, but i personally didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

I first heard of Julie Murphy and Dumplin’ at the Austin Book Festival a few years ago. At the time I was in AmeriCorps and couldn’t afford to purchase the book. After I watched the movie, I quickly ran to Barnes and Nobles to purchase it. What I love most about this book is the honesty. Julie, through Will, doesn’t shy away from the complicated thoughts and feelings that come with being different. It’s not a sermon about how people should think or act, it’s a reflection of what people actually experience. I would have loved to see this honesty as a teenager - to know that I wasn’t the only one thinking and feeling those things. There are also tons of great quotable quotes, which I always love. I’m very glad that this is my first read of 2019.

Didn’t like this one at all. Felt the characters were caricatures, especially the mother.

What a super great audiobook! I enjoyed listening to this during the week and following Willowdean’s journey of self discovery and understanding along with balancing school, her mom, her body, and friends. I will definitely continue this story as I felt I could relate to Willowdean!
