I quite liked The Atlas Six. The characters are mostly just the right level of “everyone believes themselves the smartest in the room but are they really,” for me. The character backstories and their behaviors, both in the Atlas Six and those overseeing them and/or friends/associates of theirs are all quite well executed. The personality contrasts between the characters and the way their abilities interact with each other creates so much intrigue throughout the plot. That said, at least one character gets the short straw in characterization. Also, the plot for this first book in a series of three doesn’t truly conclude itself. It worked well for me but I can see why some would really dislike these characters and dislike how this book concludes. I’m definitely continuing into book 2.

From the moment I heard that a self published book had exploded and was going to be traditionally published, I knew I had to read it.  I saw so many good reviews that it became a 5 star prediction for me.  I do think my crazy expectations did it no favours, but I loved it nonetheless.  A few things about the writing style or pacing irked me at times, but the story and the characters kept me going.  Multi POV is one of my absolute favourite fantasy tropes, so I loved that part of it as well.

Very interesting read. I wish they made more clear lines on the romance between characters, I’m very confused.

This scratched the dark academia itch for me. 6 people with various forms of magic ability all in the library of Alexandria for 1 year. Knowing that at the end of that time only five will be able to stay. Yet, what does that mean? How is it that one will leave?.... Some of them catch the deeper, and more volitile, dealings faster than others. The society has some deep and long kept secrets.

These characters are all intensely written, and amazing flawed. I do wish there was more time spent on certain characters, and less time spent on side plots that in the end I felt were distracting more than helpful. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel.

The hype lead me here, but all I can say is that I think this book was trying to hard to be something grand. A lot needs to be tightened up - it just kept going in circles, filled with redundancies rather than fleshing-out the characterization or world-building that was deeply needed. That being said, it was good enough that I'll continue with the series to see where it leads.
