Oh I loved this very quickly. It's much more complex than books I've read recently which I thoroughly appreciate! I think all the characters had distinctly unique narration and you could tell who it was who was speaking quickly and clearly.

The subject matter of time and space has always been fascinating to me, and this book while complex, is still approachable. It doesn't make you feel bad for not inherently understanding what these brilliant medians are talking about. In fact, it does not particularly need to make sense in your own brain in order to understand how amazing what they are studying and accomplishing is.

I'm super excited to read the future books and find out what happens!

It was quite slow but the author would slowly reveal small plot twists throughout which
aims to mislead you because the big key plot twist warps everything you’ve read so it’s totally unpredictable because you see each character’s perspective apart from the ones who are truly the masterminds behind these particular initiates being chosen so you are seeing it through their lens and are even more confused and creating personal theories which makes what really happens at the end more surprising than anything else because we now finally know what’s happening but the characters still don’t know the real reason why they’re there. I’m definitely reading the other books in this trilogy! I have a feeling everything I just wrote made no sense I was aiming to not spoil so it’s a book you need to read if you want to understand what I wrote 😭 it’s also got such a diverse set of characters and it’s such refreshing representation in all honesty :’)

A twisted character study - what is forged by magical power and trauma.

This lies somewhere between Novik's deadly education series (but a different kind of darkness) and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (secret society with a magical library in London).
The first three quarters were fascinating, I kept wanting to read just one more chapter, no matter which character was the focus. The end was ... Underwhelming? Abrupt? I already knew it was a trilogy, it definitely ends as if you're immediately picking up the next. Maybe I will.

The audiobook has multiple narrators, one for each POV represented, split chapter-by-chapter.

I just didn’t like it. The plot wasn’t very interesting and most of the main characters were insufferable. I’m okay with Libby and like 1/2 the time with Tristan and Nico. Also, the whole question of if knowledge should be kept or shared is utter bullshit, of course it should be shared.

Dark Academia, Secret Society, Magic, 1 🔥

“A uniquely upsetting curse, really, how little he knew how to exist when she wasn’t there.”

Would have DNF'ed at page 100 if it weren't for spoilers and a friend promising it gets better. Which it did, but I'm not sure it's worth of ~150 pages of frankly dislikeable (not in the fun way) characters doing not very interesting things and acting immaturely. The achievement of this book is saying you read it.
