I came to this collection with relatively little previous knowledge of Kuwaiti history or the Gulf War, and yet its articulation of "what happened" through personal, fragmented memory, emotion, family, and economy made it really powerful. Favorite poems include "Guns & Lemon Trees," "Forests Lean behind Us Now," "the gulf war happened," "el-Insaan min el-Nisyaan (To be human is to forget)," "What We Made," "Raghead," "Dishdasha Experience," "Homo Sacer," "Madam (Madhavati)," "For," and "Travel Guide."
