What a book. I have always wanted to read this book as soon as I heard it was released and I never had the chance until recently. It was what I listened to during my commutes to and from my classes and it was heavy. I wouldn't recommend it to you if you can be triggered by the themes of this book. I listened to her narrate this and there were moments I had to take a pause and really sit with my emotions about this. It was really something. From what we thought was sunshine and rainbows with these shows from our childhood, can be traumatic memories for the actors and they are in this case and for many others. I hope she knows how strong she is and how well loved by many she is.

I think the story is incredibly important, but the writing is lackluster. The 'after' portion of the novel feels like an afterthought, losing any momentum built up by the 'before' section. There were some interesting ideas raised, but ultimately nothing feels completely thought out or accomplished. The writing feels impersonal, and at times I felt like I was reading a fictional young adult novel instead of an autobiography. Elements that felt crucial to Jeannette's inner self were brought up only to be abandoned or wrapped up in one sentence later on (her OCD?). Of course, I understand that this is her real life, and things aren't often wrapped up nicely in a little bow like in fiction, but maybe more time was needed before publishing. Overall, I liked the book, it was a quick and easy read, but it didn't capture me like it seemed to do to others.

This book is absolutely gut wrenching. Jeannette dives into the trauma that was her life. I’m so glad she was able to find the help she needed. She also gives insight as to what it’s like to be a celebrity. She was deeply vulnerable in writing this book.

Harrowing, hilarious, and relatable. A deeply troubling and deeply healing familiar narrative for the children of impossible and abusive mothers.
