I've decided 2023 is going to be the year I reread all the American Girl books in chronological order. These books were a huge part of my childhood and I want to rediscover them, see if they still hold up in my grown up eyes. First up is Kaya, a girl who came out shortly after I stopped reading the books actively. So she is new to me. And I loved this book. It sparked all the old feelings in me. The best part is it reignited the interest I had as child reading these books, the interest to learn more about these time periods and cultures. Which thankfully, will be more easy to explore now with the internet. My only gripe with the book is I wish it had been written by an Indigenous Author. I know they had advisory boards as the do with all the books but still. Regardless I'm excited to continue Kaya's journey and branch out and learn more about the Nimiipuu people!

This American Girl series is about a Native American girl named Kaya.

This book was not as successful for me as other American Girl books. I love that they branched into a wider variety of cultures, but I think the brevity of the book made it too difficult to describe the culture smoothly. Instead, it was pared down to episodes showing distinctions and research, without enough connection.

I am reading along with the American Girl’s Podcast and was really excited to get to Kaya. I did have her doll when I was growing up. I feel that this book smashes so much into 70 pages that it doesn’t successfully introduce much. We brush past a lot of Nez Perce culture without really explaining or understanding what is happening. I do enjoy headstrong Kaya’s character and will look forward to learning more about her journey and hopefully her culture.
