This is such an excellent series. Bacigalupi creates a real dystopia, a fetid, decaying, chasm of ruin testing the very nature of humanity.

I absolutely loved the complex characters in this book. Mr. Bacigalupi does a great job of not only humanizing but depicting the true cost of war. I loved the social commentary embedded in the novel and was thrilled to see some of my favorite characters from Shipbreaker and the Drowned cities return. Excellent read for teens who like fast paced adventure fiction.

I don't know why, but Bacigalupi's books always have a "gritty, dirty" feel to them. Not sure how to describe them. This is a good book, well written as always. I enjoyed that we get to learn a bit more about Tool and his pack members.

Probably a 3.5. Good ending to the series, even pulled characters from the first book back into it.

A pretty good followup. But too much fighting and too much running. And not enough character or world-building. But still a fair read and one that raises questions. Mostly related to comparing laws related to animals versus law related to humans. Which would presumably touch on autonomous ai as well. Basically a corporate dystopia. But it lost half a star between finishing it last night and writing a review a day later. 3.5 of 5.

I've enjoyed the Ship Breaker series, though my favorite by far is the first book. Bacigalupi's multicultural cast of teenagers making community in chaos strikes me as true and optimistic, just as the environmental and technological future is dystopian and pessimistic.
