My copy was translated by Constance Garnett.

My favorite was The Seagull. Least favorite Three Sisters. Each of his four classic plays manages to scratch at the universal while keeping the characters and plot naturalistic. Very Russian.

Got to the later plays... they just had too many characters for me to follow. (I haven't read many plays.)

This is still my favorite translation, especially as an actor. Gotta love Chekhov!

Read: The Bear and The Seagull
Bear is hilarious
Seagulls tragic, insightful (uncomfortably so) on act of writing.
Vanya crams so much humanity into its pages, it nearly bursts at the seams.

I wasn't too fond of the contemporary translation I read, thus my reason for the four stars. Really loved the following - Ivanov, The Seagull, of course, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard.
