This is a great introduction to a story that literally illustrates how hate can change you. But also how sorrow can change you. And that's sometimes you need to kick sorrow and hate in the ass to find yourself again.

Great world building, themes, and pretty well realized characters. Artwork is on point. Really, if I was just more into monster of the week type stuff this would knock it out of the park for me. I can see why this is on so many best-of lists.

3.5 stars or so.

While the story did feel rushed at some points, this creative team has effectively blended relevant themes into a dramatic story of monster hunters and world-ending threats. There are some really engaging elements here and the story is strong enough to carry the ideas which underlie it.

It's interesting reading BIPOC authors and illustrators and their take on things like racism in America. Hate and pain causing a physical manifestation is a pretty cool concept.

This comic is absolutely gorgeous. The demon reveals are epic and it feels like they're climbing out of the page. The pace zips along with most of the writing being dialogue, leaving plenty of time to pore over the wonderfully detailed artwork. Loved the experience of reading each issue.

The Sangeryes are a 1920s Black family fighting demons in Harlem. Why say more? You need to read this.
