This is my second read of the book in several year, and I still haven’t figured out how I feel about it. On one hand, it’s violent and explicit and the usage of the “all the women want to sleep with the male main character” trope greatly annoys me makes it feel a bit like the author’s self insert. On the other hand, it is still one of the best and most technically written mysteries that I have ever read, and the effort of the character building shows through in the thoroughness and complexity of the details. Maybe I’ll revisit it again in several years and try to figure out how I feel about it.

HO. LY. SHITAKE.

While I definitely did make a number of correct guesses in the first half of the book for the ending, there was still one puzzle I didn’t figure out, and I quite enjoyed the entertainment that was acted upon in solving that last mess. This was a thrilling ride of torment and love (not together).

Note: know your personal triggers and what you can handle. Sexual abuse and violent crimes against women is a theme that pops up several times and is graphically described.

J'ai beaucoup apprécié le livre parce qu'il se déroule au sein d'une grande famille, donc il y a beaucoup de personnages mais on s'y perd pas. Pour un livre écrit début 2000 et par un homme, je le trouve assez engagé. Ça se lit très bien, les éléments sont apportés tranquillement au fur et à mesure mêm  si le début met un peu de temps à se mettre en place. La page de fin est absolument mais absolument nulle.
