Ultimately, a good chunk of the book is a fetch quest. The chapters that dealt with the politics of alliance were, in my view, the highlights of the book. While it picks up toward the end, I struggled in the first half.

Just got more questions about the lore and I wish I had a physical book to keep the map of the different places in mind more easily!!

like we have a huge creature/bug in the lake?? Assassin bugs?? Water beetles sound so cute, gotta learn more. Also the mosquito/magic thing sounds so fun, I can't wait to see it unfold

This book was quite a bit shorter than the first two with the fourth picking up in length once again, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Compared to the second book this one was very slow the first half whereas the second half was everywhere everything all at once and was very action packed. We get some warfare and action in this one but a lot more spy work, magic, alternative agendas, tension etc was focused on which it does well. Characters that experienced a lot of change in the previous book now try and find their place in the world deciding who they want to be. On to the next!

Felt like not a lot happened in this one, setting up for later in the series. Continue to enjoy these just enough to keep pushing on with them.

Here we get a lift in the action. Characters are coming into their own and the stakes are revealing themselves, as our perspective on the Wasp Empire and the lands beyond its borders widens. The Skater-kinden are a particularly inspired race of untrustworthy water dancers. Tchaikovsky doesn't seem to be driving towards any particular thematic depths, but the action is well-written and the cultures continue to be interesting.
