Wow... what a slow start.

Stuff finally kicked in when, oh you know, ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS IS MUDERED.

Gah. *headdesk several times*

Anyway - the romance was a bit overpowering... but not as much as prior to Awakened.

And I think the ending was kind of fanserviced. >_>

The only thing that really disappointed me about this book was the fact that there's another one in the series.

I mean REALLY. I'm starting to think this series is being drawn out WAYYYYY too long. Really.

And I also think that PC and Kristin have lost sight of what their original intentions were... if I go back to Marked and read it.

*sigh*

I felt this book is comparitive to the rest in the series. I enjoyed it.I don't care much for the pop culture references. But I like the theme of friendship throughout the series. I also enjoy the goddess Nyx's character, it's a very interesting one. I find these book to be enteraining read and a break from the types of books I generally read. I do think that this book is better suited to a much younger crowd 14-17.

So this is the eighth book in this series and I have to be honest I don’t really see where else this series can go. I cannot just stop in the middle of a series. I have no idea why I can’t just let it go but I can’t, I must know what happens to these characters, so I will continue to read these House of Night novels no matter how many they come out with.

In this book we see Zoey has returned from the Otherworld and is hesitant to return to all the evil that she has to fight back at the House of Night, even though all her friends have returned and so has Neferet. Eventually after Neferet pulls out her evil claws and goes to some extremes to get Zoey to come back, Zoey does return to the House of Night in mourning. When the group finally gets all back together it’s time to figure out what the next step to take is to defeat this evil that never seems to diminish in these books.

However now Rephaim and Stevie Rae are now in quite the predicament now that everyone is back in Tulsa, will they separate for good and break their imprint or expose themselves to everyone?

I did enjoy this book, mainly because of Stevie Rae’s story. Her and Rephaim’s story was a nice departure from the normal House of Night drama. I really do love this series and the characters but I really think someone needs to win at this point. Or something big and unexpected needs to happen where it changes the course of the story or eliminates Neferet or Kalona. I mean I am starting to get bored with Neferet getting away with everything. Come on everyone can’t be that blind forever! Have Kalona destroy her and Kalona be the main enemy or something. As far as I am concerned he is a much more entertaining villain. You never know what he is going to do.

Other than the Rephaim and Stevie Rae story most it was just filler for the story. I wish there would have been more of a battle at the end of the book. I felt like it led up to this big ending but the ending came up short for me, especially when it comes to fighting Kalona and Neferet.

Overall I was definitely sucked into this book just like every other book in this series and I like ‘Awakened’. I just can’t seem to get enough of these characters. I will have to read ‘Destined’ for sure.

I hated the beginning of this book. Not only was it slow and monotonous, these are books for younger readers, middle and high school teens - I think it went a bit too far; high school students sharing a bed, a room, making love in the forest. I understand that this is what kids are dealing with now, and I even understand what that scene really meant for both characters, but I just think it was too descriptive and it went too far. Having said that, once you get past the beginning, once they go back to the house of night, things kind of pick up. There are surprises, the story is told well, and I really enjoyed it. I do enjoy the series, but some of it just seems so amateur, while the rest seems masterfully written. I did notice that this printing was edited better than the last; that was refreshing not to have to go back and re-read sentences only to figure out there was an error.

**********SPOILER ALERT**********

To be honest, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the House of Night series. When I first started reading it I really enjoyed it, but now I’m not so sure anymore. Regardless, I picked up Awakened, book number eight in the series, when it came out. It didn’t disappoint me completely but it could have been better.

Zoey and Stark have come back to the world of the living, but not without any scars. Zoey is till trying to cope with Heath’s death while Stark is still recovering from having been sliced up in order to save Zoey. Meanwhile, back in Tulsa Neferet is still trying to convince everyone that she hasn’t turned to Darkness and unfortunately for Zoey’s friends people are starting to believe her. And on top of everything else going on, there’s Stevie Rae who is trying very hard to hide her relationship with Rephaim, a raven-mocker. Now Zoey has to leave the island where she feels completely safe and go back to Tulsa to face the music.

I have my problems with many aspects of this book, but there were some development in the story that finally made me happy. For one, Zoey finally made her mind up about who she wants to be with. Granted Heath is dead and Erik has turned out to be a majorly jealous jerk so all that’s left is Stark but still. Now we’ve moved on from Zoey’s love troubles so I may just start appreciating her more. I’d have to say that Zoey’s friends are the part of the series I like the most. Every single time Aphrodite opens her mouth to speak I start smiling or laughing depending on what actually comes out of her mouth. And the Twins are just plain special and they just crack me up. As for gay vampyres Jack and Damien, well, I just can’t help but like them.

As for Zoey, it doesn’t really seem like she’s changed or grown all that much in the eight books that span the series. She has her moments where I start to really love her but then she does something and goes back to her old ways and that love sort of disappears. Personally, I like to see the characters grow but I apparently haven’t had that luxury with Zoey so far. The other person I had a problem with was Stevie Rae. For the most part, I like her but in this book, and the previous one for that matter, it just felt like she was going around in a circle with the whole Rephaim and Darkness thing. But like I said, for the most part, I like Stevie Rae.

As many issues as I may have with Awakened, and the House of Night series as a whole, I still enjoyed reading it. It seemed that at the end the story seemed to finally be moving along. Maybe with the next book I’ll start truly enjoying this series again. But regardless, I’m sure I’ll pick it up anyway.
