This is the second book in the Evander Mills series, but would also work well as a standalone. The book takes place in San Francisco in the early 1950s when being gay isn't a crime but dancing and hand-holding between same-sex couples is considered an improper act and an arrestable offense. The main character, Andy, had worked as a police inspector until he was caught in a raid in a gay bar and fired. He now works as a Private Investigator helping members of the gay community. Because of his past as a cop, many of whom took delight in abusing the patrons of gay bars, he has to work to earn the trust of the community before they will let him help them. I preferred the first book, Lavender House, but still enjoyed this book. I really like Andy and am hoping he continues to start living and enjoying his life. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A 3.5 for me. I think I enjoyed learning about Andy’s history and a bit of the history lgbt people in the army and after than the actual mystery. I just felt that the relationships Andy had with the people around him were more interesting and the mystery felt like an afterthought.

Fast paced and intriguing, with good characters that you want to see succeed. But ultimately the ending was quite anticlimactic.

4.5 Stars - A really solid follow up to Lavender House. The mystery was compelling and the new characters were fun too! I really like that we got to more about Evander and his past too! This book wasn’t as silly as its predecessor, but it’s definitely Queerer, which works for me!

These aren't necessarily my usual fair, but they're still great. And this one was a really excellent sequel.
