This was actually a fun read and better than I was expecting. There were a lot of details that made the main character feel genuine and realistic and I appreciated that a ton. Even the relationships were surprisingly sweet in some aspects. The romance is very fast-paced and somewhat instant, but that is also somewhat evident from the story summary so I am not disappointed because I knew what I was getting into. There were only a couple of dramatic moments that sort of messed up the immersion for me because Wren would do something that should have been way more difficult to do, but I don't mind that much and the story writing is pretty good for the most part. My main gripe is that the ending happened extremely fast and was confusing because of it. I am also not a huge fan of the blood scenes, but the magic (and sensual) elements surrounding blood and how it is used are definitely interesting and good for the less queasy. I really liked some of the characters, and overall, this was a fun and gripping story that I want to continue!

Got this book for free on Apple Books. Honestly, the plot was kind of promising (minus the "why choose", didn't need that, but obviously I was aware of it). Unfortunately, I feel like the author wanted too much and that left us with too little time to get attached to any of the characters and huge plot holes. Was it a very good read? No. But it was quick and easy to read and I didn't mind it.
So yes, a lot of issues (and plot twists that were very obvious), but I had a surprisingly okay (maybe even good?) time

I always feel saddened when a fantasy setting has potential but the story leaves the greatness on the floor. Just a few touched here and there would’ve enhanced  the world, the characters and the story so much but oh well.

The actual world and concept of this book is REALLY cool. I HATE the king MMC. If the MMC had been edited into the same concept and character but with less thinly veiled non-consent (just bc she ends up liking it doesn’t mean it’s not non consensual) this book would almost be a 4.

I think I get what the author was trying to do with him, but he’s not redeemable to me. He’s abusive and irrational.  Luckily one of the MMC is a cinnamon roll or I would have DNFed it because I found the MMC really unbearable, and triggering, even with the cool world and story line. I want to read the rest of the series because I like the world but I can’t do it if the king MMC acts the same and doesn’t actually apologize and change.

The book needed another heavy edit. The “character development” was reduced to short internal monologues that essentially amounted to “I’m different now than 15 seconds ago” with no real  support or actual development. I’m all for suspending belief for the sake of fantasy, but
terrified virgin slave to poly warrior queen with no actual training, character development challenges, or genuine physical/emotional growth
was beyond irrational.  Character “development”  was generally awkward and disjointed from the plot, which was also incredibly choppy, and world building was minimal and piece mail. Beyond plot and character issues, there were several incongruities (is he a cousin or a nephew?), grammar issues, the writing was generally mediocre, and the tropes were trope-y in all the wrong ways (I love a good trope, but these were predictable and not fleshed out). For a book advertised as it is, I expected  much more spice than was actually present.

All that said, I wanted to spend time reading something distracting when I couldn’t focus and didn’t have energy to invest in other things and this was a free bonus download through hoopla on my library card, so it met the criteria for my present situation (hence why I finished it).  Unclear if I’ll seek out sequels.

Good plot, interesting premise, horrendous ending.

Basic points of the premise: is technically post-apocalyptic, the apocalypse was caused by demons and magical beings taking over the world, all humans in existence have been enslaved for generations over 600 years at least.

I surprisingly liked this book. The first part really had me question but it got good. On spice level there is only a couple ok scenes. I give it 3/5 spice.  It is a clif hanger but the second book is out and on KU.
