2022 Horror Reading Challenge: Folktale

I loved everything about this book. The Children of Chicago is a modern telling of the Pied Piper tale, set in Chicago in the heart of a police investigation. Our lead here is Detective Lauren, who’s whole life is a tragedy, and who deals with the ghosts of Chicago’s children on a daily basis. The Pied Piper story has always been creepy, so it was a perfect one to turn into a modern horror story. Something that I really appreciate About this book, is how Chicago itself is a character, I learned SO much about the history Chicago that I feel like I just completed a Chicago History course all while reading an insanely interesting book. It has a Candyman vibe to it, which also took place in Chicago, and is mentioned in this book. If you love Fairy Tales, and embrace their dark history I would suggest this book to you. It’s my current favorite read of the year.

My first read of 2023! Solidly creepy story that combines police procedurals, urban legends and the paranormal with some weaknesses in the narration/exposition for sure. Pelayo gets all the Chicago details right. The novel stays scary while also being a little sad, touching on the all too real violence in Chicago and so many other cities across the U.S.
