The amazing sequel to A DARK AND HOLLOW STAR that I simply could not put down.

A CRUEL AND FATED LIGHT really dove into character development and we learned so much more about each character’s wants and dreams. I was loving the role of Celadon and Theo in this book, they really helped propel the series forward.

Yet another appreciation review regarding the LGBTQ+ rep- letting the readers know Celadon is ace really made me feel seen as an asexual individual myself. I would love to see this expanded upon. The queer diversity in this book is incredible.

The first 500 pages or so, I was loving the vibes and the pacing of the story. I was loving spending time in the characters’ world and getting to know them. Then. The last one hundred and fifty pages had me pulling my hair and screaming. How could you Ashley Shuttleworth!!!! HOW COULD YOU END IT LIKE THAT!!!!!

5/5 stars, I can’t wait for the next book!!

A very satisfying second installment in this series! IT QUEER, IT SAPPHIC, IT GAY, IT FULL OF TENSION ACROSS THE SPECTRUM. There are villain backstory interludes! Sexy sword lessons! Bodyguard pining! Inclusive fae mythology! A super nerdy magic system involving a 20 sided die that I will never not find entertaining! And throughout all of this, more world building and new characters (part of that tension) and some great setup for the next book!

There are also some trigger warnings: suicide off-page and on-page, grief, death, blood, working through trauma. The author has posted (website) where some of these possibly triggering mentions are in the book. Be kind to yourself in reading it.
