I'm not sure what ending I was expecting, but it wasn't this. However, it makes the story truly chilling and you end up questioning things as you very much know they're wrong but yet you understand how it got to that. It makes you wonder what makes someone human or a monster, where the line should be drawn, and how much one can go from one to the other. A very interesting way to denounce bullying while not having a clearly cut morale to conclude the story.
The fact that the story was in two times, part journal entries from the past and part illustrations for the present, was really great, unusual in the best way possible, and contributed 100% to the atmosphere of the book/story.
