DNF:::
I wanted to finish and like this book I really did, but I just couldn't do it. There wasn't really a story line there and the characters bored me. I should have known, while I was reading it I thought "hm this sounds familiar" ahhh right Its Kinda a Funny Story that's where it's from. I tried but failed

Loves some of the quotes in this book. Great story of what it's like to live with mental illness. Loved it.

The Memory of Light shows the aftermath of an unsuccessful suicide attempt. It takes the reader with a young woman learning to heal, the importance of a life, how fragile mental stability can be, and how to be the best her she can be - one day, one situation at a time.

I'm crying. Four years ago, I tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills (much like Vicky, our main character). My stay in the psychiatric ward was not, unfortunately, like Vicky's and I still think of that experience often, and whether or not I should have stayed longer, etc. I am so overjoyed that I picked this book up. I almost feel as if I've come to some sort of understanding with my depression and why I wanted to take my life. I'm having a hard time putting my feelings into words but I will say: read this book. Read it now. Maybe it will help someone else.

A deeply moving book about moving back toward life after being saved from an earnest suicide attempt. Vicky had to learn what it really means (for her) to have chemical depression, and how to be her own person in her household, rather than only pretending in front of her family. At first, I was worried that the book would be too bleak for me to feel comfortable recommending it to teenagers, but I think it is balanced and mostly realistic.
I did have some problems with the compete lack of confidentiality or professional ethics when it came to discussing medical treatments. A psychiatrist can't typically just discuss other patients' diagnoses and treatments with other patients in their group therapy. They also can't typically *take 4 teenagers home with them* to their personal ranch with their spouse. I can overlook all that in the name of a good story, but it definitely can't get 5 stars due to those details.
