I liked learning about the Korean pantheon and folklore through the characters in this book. Our fiery, ambitious heroine and the cold, angry fallen god balance each other out so well (though really they are both villains in their pasts). Every character changes drastically from the beginning to the end of this story even though it takes place over a week. A little bit of murder mystery and the fate of the world at stake made me keep turning the pages for what happens next? I loved the little pop culture references to S Korea in the 90s.

SOPHIW KIM COUNT UR FUCKIN DAYS <33
the way i cried over this is not even funny . seokga won over my heart at the end and so did hani helloooo

then again tbh they had me mad too many times to make my review overly positive . most of their actions pissed me off so bad but other than that i did like their romance and the entire part where they were searching for the witness <3

also anyone wanna talk about how many times it was mentioned what car seokga has? šŸ˜ was it just me or was that mentioned quite a lot lmaoo him and his jaguar xjs
(straight up copy and pasted this from good reads)

update; been a few many days now and i'm changing the star ratings just because i'm always thinking about this book like i think it is now a piece of me and even tho i stand by what i said about the characters making me mad like. all the time THEY ALSO MADE ME EMOTIONAL AND GIDDY

an intriguing blend of korean mythology and kdrama! i wish i was more familiar with the latter bc i've seen other reviews mention a lot of references and nods to popular kdrama series, but unfortunately they'd all go over my head.

i always enjoy reading less-utilized mythology sources; i was constantly looking up different creature references. and the food šŸ¤ŒšŸ¼ any food descriptions or new foods are a plus for me in books. the early 90's setting was also quite fun and nostalgic - i almost keeled over at "expensive nokia 121" lol.

while the murder mystery could be gruesome at parts, it was nicely juxtaposed with the silliness of the kdrama-esque relationship dynamic between our fallen god seokga and the infamous gumiho hani. i do feel like it wasn't the most complex relationship i've read in a book, but it was fun. they did act a bit teenager-ish for a god and a mythological creature of hundreds/thousands of years of age, but i chalk it up to the modern inspirations.

i probably would've given this 3.5 stars, but i like the creativity of blending contemporary kdrama with ancient mythology.

not one of my fav reads this year, but i'm interested in seeing where book 2 goes with that ending šŸ‘€

This was a surprisingly good read! Iā€™m a fan of modern(ish) romantasy, paired with K-Drama-esque elements and Korean mythology, and a fun enemies-to-lovers love story it was a solid read.

However, there were some things that kind of irked me. First, there were times that the dialogue read TOO corny, or parts of the plot that unnecessarily inserted humor in serious situations. Second, Seokgaā€™s character development kind of flatlined for me.
When he and Hani first hooked up, it felt as if all of Seokgaā€™s defining characteristics suddenly disappeared and he became a dog on a leash for Hani (which, I suppose could be argued for character development, but I digress).

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and read it fairly quickly! I LOVED Haniā€™s character and the K-Drama-like plot reminiscent of dramas like Goblin and Tale of the Nine Tailed - def recommend if youā€™re a fan of either of these shows/concepts!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. If you love Kdramas and all things Korean mythology then this book is for you! I absolutely love the different tropes (enemies to lovers, forced proximity, one bed) in this story and the banter between Seokga and Hani. I was immediately sucked into the world of New Sinsi and couldnā€™t help but fall in love with the characters. Sophie Kim had me on the edge of my seat unexpectedly through the mystery and crimes happening in the city which I loved watching Seokga and Hani work together on to solve.

As fun as majority of this book was, I did not expect the ending and how heartbreaking it was, but Iā€™m definitely excited for the next installment to this series. The God and the Gumiho comes out tomorrow on June 4th, make sure to read this gem of a fantasy!
