I really liked this one. I laughed, I cried, it made me wish for friends like that.

I did chuckle a few times but this wasn’t overly funny. The female friendships are a strong point. There are important messages about Domestic abuse and the author’s notes at the end have some frightening statistics about the increase in domestic violence during the Covid lockdown.

(TW: Domestic Violence )

“I don’t want to go to prison now I’m finally free.”

👆🏽That’s basically the quote that sums up the whole book to be honest. I had overwhelming anxiety from the very first chapter because you know from the jump that Sally killed her husband and you don’t know what’s gonna happen after that. Did he deserve it? Absolutely TF yes. Does she deserve to go to prison? Absolutely TF not. But, that’s not always how things work so ya gotta let it play out.

I absolutely loved the themes of sisterhood, courage and empowerment in this book.

The only thing that I wish is that it would’ve came out  DURING the pandemic. I only say that because I feel like I would’ve been more immersed in the story if I could’ve felt the same sense of confinement as them. I definitely remember the feeling, but it’s different now and fleeting so if I had read it then it definitely would’ve had a deeper impact.

This book is so multidimensional. There’s generational trauma, domestic violence, covid lockdown, friendship, courage, sisterhood, and so much love.

It managed to be both a dark comedy and a harrowing story of domestic violence during lockdown and what survivors go through.

The characters are well developed and multifaceted, and so, so strong! The strength, love, and friendship these women give each other feels so genuine and heart warming.

The writing is absolutely beautiful, both hilarious, gut wrenching, tense and thrilling when it needed to be. The author remained sensitive to the various cultures she portrayed outside her own lived experience and sensitive to the topic of DV.

Listened to the audiobook for book club. It was decently funny and lighthearted while tackling a dark topic. While I understand why the author set this book during the COVID lockdown, it was one of the parts of the book that I disliked most.
