A nicely balanced mix of both funny and sad. Eleanor is an intriguing central character; although she's a little rough around the edges and difficult to understand at first, I grew to like and root for her as I gradually learned more about her personality. The book provides an interesting look at depression and reclusive behavior, and Eleanor's heartbreaking, slowly unfolding background gives the story depth. Her observations are often quirky and humorous, yet always incredibly honest and relatable. I loved the rich, extensive vocabulary that Honeyman uses on these pages and found myself referring to the dictionary often.

Eleanor, believe it or not, is NOT completely fine.
If you enjoyed The Rosie Project, Me Before You, or Where'd You Go Bernadette then this is the book for you. At its heart, it's a sad story told in a humorous way. Following Eleanor's missteps and blunders makes the reader like a very unlikeable character. Which is a great testament to Honeyman's ability to craft a character. Eleanor is not someone I'd like to know in real life. She would not be invited to my imaginary dinner party. Even if she showed up at the door with a half eaten box of biscuits and a bottle of vodka, I'd slam the door in her face.
Story: 3 stars
Character Dev: 5 stars
Prose/Language: 4 stars

I’ll be honest, this book gets 3 stars just for the twist of an ending. Otherwise, I’m not sure how I got through it. Prettyyyy boring.

I had a hard time rating this book. Eleanor's character is entirely familiar to me--I definitely went to college with so many like her--and so I found her interesting and somewhat sympathetic. Raymond's complete acceptance of her was such a joy, but almost too perfect.
