A challenging read - a roadmap to feminism and lesbians and lesbian feminists in Europe in 1900 +/- 25 years. Fighting for the vote, fighting for rights; fighting for freedom. But choosing to veil their feelings and reality in their writings, because obscenity and repression would suppress the work and endanger their lives. In some ways they were full of themselves (i.e., where are the lesbians and feminists who do not populate drawing rooms - although admittedly I could be wrong about this), but in other ways, we have a huge debt to these women for forging the path that has made some of the benefits of our life today possible.

Who is the narrator? I am going with the spirit of Sappho.

The future of Sappho shall be us.
i had a really hard time with wanting to pick up this book. the prose was beautiful and the message was strong but was personally not engaging until i got to historical events and figures i already had some background on — wwi and virginia woolf. i think i would take a lot more away from this book had i more context, and maybe i’ll reread it one day for that reason.

“If a novel bores you, leave it” - if only this advice was sooner, rather than on page 216.
