The prose were too much and it was so slow.

vienās un tajās pašās lapas pusēs bija brīnišķīgi savīti, metaforām bagāti teikumi un absolūtas šausmas vienlaikus. sajūta kā ejot pa celmiem klātu mežu, visu laiku ķeras kājas. sižets un apstākļi, galvenie varoņi un to attiecības man absolūti nepalīdzēja, es tikai turpināju klupt, arī aiz tiem.

I really enjoyed this book, which is surprising since I’d never have thought the themes, storylines, or topics would be things that grab my attention. But there was something about this book that caught me and held me. There’s an earnestness in Lotto and Mathilde’s marriage that I feel isn’t common in secular, modern day story telling. And although there are secrets and skeletons in the closets, there’s a genuine want and desire between Lotto and Mathilde to do right by one another… I appreciated that the book was split half-in-half, with the first half focusing on Lotto and the second half focusing on Mathilde. There was a lot of depth and umph to this story and I really enjoyed it.
3 stars because it took some time to grab me (but once it did I was hooked), and because it felt a bit longer than it needed to be.

I had such high hopes, but they were not met. The writing was quirky, and the story not credible. I almost took off another star for conflating phone sex with kink, but let's not be as petty as the heroine, shall we?

Tussen het pretentieuze gewauwel van zowat ieder personage valt er zowaar een interessant verhaal te ontdekken. Maar je moet verdomme goed je best doen.

****4/5 (I'd need to reread to decide on the full five, but it's very, very close)

Exquisite tragedy (or comedy, but I've read somewhere that this is just a matter of perspective), (almost) on par with Shakespeare and the Ancient Greeks.
