It took me forever to get through this book, and honestly, even though the story was interesting enough, I doubt I'll follow the series. For most of the book, I was really only interested in Xiala and Serapio's stories. I kept trying to speed read through the other stories while also trying to keep all the names and characters straight. It wasn't a bad book, just not the book for me.

started strong for me and kind of petered out. i enjoyed the writing and most of the characters, but the stakes seemed kind of unclear to me in a way that made the climax sort of disappointing. have to think on this one a bit

I liked the book and the story, but found some of the jumps between time and place a little disorienting at first.

I think this is a book I need to read in print so I can follow the names and the world building a bit closer. Definitely want to give it another shot

I LOVE the setting of this book. It’s based off of pre-colonial Americas and is fantastic. The settings and people are described super well without being long winded and I enjoyed the various parts of the world we get glimpses of.

Something I really enjoyed is the political undercurrent throughout. Maybe undercurrent is too light of a term, but it’s hard to truly know who are the villains (except for one character that I loathed) and who are the heroes. Instead of separating characters by good and bad, they felt more real and I really appreciated that. The character development is well done too.

Very enjoyable adventure with some really cool characters. I’ll be jumping into the next one for sure!

I'm a little torn on the rating because the characters and the topic are amazing. The story is truly original. However, this book was way too long. The first half of the book was SLOW. The second half was better but it was really only the last 50 pages where I truly enjoyed the writing. Part of me wants to see how the character story lines play out in the 2nd book but the other part of me has better books to read. This was not a "can't put it down" book for me.
