- YERBA BUENA is a small book that packs a big punch. It cuts right to the heart, looking both the best and worst life has to offer straight in the eye.
- This book does a great job of showing how trauma stays with you, but that doesn't mean your life will be devoid of joy and growth.

This book was beautiful. I have heard it described as though it reads like a Lorde song, and I find that to be spot on. It is sad certainly, but it also made me feel like life can be beautiful. I love books that allow me to romanticize my own life a little bit even I’ve put the book down. Maybe it’s because Nina LaCour has been a YA author until this novel, but it reminded me of when I first started reading regularly, and I would read a YA contemporary novel that really spoke to my teenaged emotions, as tumultuous and unknowable to me as they were at the time. That was beautiful, and I am so thankful I was able to experience that once more.
I will say the ending felt a bit rushed and disjointed, but i am so pleased overall

This book was stunning. It’s vivid, luscious, immersive, and heartbreaking. While I cannot adopt it for my classroom (I teach 7th graders), it will hold a spot in my personal library.
I am a huge fan of Nina LaCour’s YA work. Her writing is haunting and enveloping. As I said before, she creates an immersive reading experience. Her foray into adult novels is exactly what I expected. An elevated version of her writing. Her characters are still grappling with their own demons, but the voice has shifted to a more mature yet just as uncertain narrator. You feel for Sara and Emilie. You root for them. You’re ready for them to take root. It’s the most frustrating, intense, and real relationship. This book was phenomenal!!!
