Positive: There are some beautiful metaphors in this novel making use of water & nature.
Negative: It was painful reading a novel centred around a woman being tossed around by men. And I didn’t love the ending.

Enough time has passed that I forgot the movie. It is super interesting that a dude wrote this book. At times it is super obvious. Especially with talking about losing virginity and women’s bodies. But I was still intrigued and really enjoyed reading the book. I couldn’t put it down. Now I have to go watch the movie again.

This is my favorite book of all time. For fear of giving anything away I will be giving no further explanation but I HIGHLY recommend it! Edit: written by a white man, do with this what you will.

I looooved to read this - even though I have some criticism about it too (the “all the rape stories by American soldiers turned out to be untrue and they are so kind instead” sentence for example) - it was so informative about something I had no idea of

I'm very unsure of how to rate this book. The writing itself was great, but the subject matter was difficult for me to listen to/read when I know that the author is a white man. A white man who has degrees and has worked in Japan, but still. If I didn't know who the author was, my rating would most likely be higher but I'm hesitate because it's just creepy to read about a young girl's "virginity" being sold to the highest bidder. After doing some research on how the book was written, the author was also sued by the geisha that he interviewed because he promised to keep her identity anonymous, but listed her in his sources anyways and she was receiving death threats from past clients. I think I'll be picking up her book soon so I can know her side of things.
