I admit I struggled  connecting with either Finch or Violet. I will not speak about the accuracy of the portrayal of bipolar disorder since I don't have that illness but I have not particularly liked or care for the characters. Not the way I should have. Maybe I'm simply outgrowing YA. Maybe Jennifer Niven's writing just isn't my vibe.

It was a great emotional book. The characters had a true connection and there was beautiful writing.

I have decided to dnf. I just don't care for any of the characters. It's not bad, this just isn't resonating with me as it maybe would have had I been 19 (when I bought it...)

A fantastic story, which has left me utterly devastated yet educated on the tragedy of suicide. The book has an unusual structure, as it begins with a lighthearted and hopeful nature and ends with a tear-inducing tragedy which leaves its readers heartbroken. There is undoubtedly a sense of closure at the end which, if you look past the feelings of denial Niven manages to induce in her readers, allows one to reflect on the events at hand and perhaps understand more about the grief and suffering that follow suicide. It is ultimately an incredible story, and whilst it takes an emotional toll on its audience (which can last days…) it encourages you to have a more open mind towards mental illness and suicide.
