I donât know how I feel about this book.
I found there to be quite a bit of toxic, red flag behaviours between the two main characters and some general immaturity maybe? But that is a product of how they grew up and was probably intentional.
Loved the diversity and how old ideas and misogyny were called out.
But I found some of the writing to be a bit like a poor translation almost? Like someone put a whole book into google translate and didnât proof read it. I donât know maybe it was my ebook copy? But I got it from the library so I donât think so. There were sometimes words missing, or simple proof read type things that were just missed. (And Iâm not talking about character dialogue here, criticizing characters who are multilingual, I mean the rest of the book)
There were some parts that seemed a bit choppy and some references to what a character was doing that just werenât correct, like back to the google translate thing where a character would be lying down and then in the next sentence it would say something like âshe leaned against the wallâ kind of abrupt like wait, when did she sit up she was just working on her car? Thats maybe a poor example but its the one thats coming to mind right now.
Loved the story premise, the writing had something to work on but wasnât horrible, I found the main male character annoying at times and there were a couple iffy consent places for me personally but consent is BIG for me so I donât know. I wish we would have seen Kareenas job! It sounded so cool but it was mentioned like twice and we never got a scene of her actually at work. Overall not too many triggering topics in this book which was nice and a solid little romance!

i love the characters (sans kareena's immediate fam): both kareena and prem are complex, w/ the latter sometimes turning me to goo bc of his thoughtfulness; their friends are hilarious; and the former's aunties are amusingly chaotic. the novel's also got a big heart - w/ kareena's ties to her mom thru the house and car, prem's desire to improve healthcare for his community - and its exploration of south asian issues like the immigrant experience, societal pressure, family, misogyny and sexism are appreciatively nuanced. throw in mouthwatering indian food and gorgeous indian clothes + culture, and it's a great read.
which it def couldve been if only i didnt find the novel's central conflicts - namely the selling of the house and prem's issue w/ love - unconvincing. for the former, rina's dad certainly has no qualms selling the house his dead wife toiled over, esp considering how loved up they were. and why the sudden extension at the end? he couldve made rina's life so much less stressful since the beginning. for the latter, i find it hard to believe prem's aversion/non-belief in love. gori's used as an explanation, but what abt before he met her? and he seems so hell-bent on it just to flip his entire philosophy after a single convo.
in the end, this book def succeeds at what it sets out to do - a romcom thats actually romantic and funny - but its core conflicts are too-obvious tools that exist just to make the heroine's life miserable.
