Four different stories: a family leisure time interlude story, an old fashioned story in an other-dimenion-dinosaur-island peppered with a father-son relationship, Jonathan confronting Damian Wayne and realizing that super-powers are not always a match for a trained to-be-killer, later trained to-be-vigillante 10 year old and finally Superman finding himself amidst the bitter love story of Frankenstain's monster and his bride. Not bad, not classic.

I continue to enjoy the emphasis on Superman as father and husband.

Continuing to watch the boys grow their relationship is lots of fun. They get lots of support from their parents, as well as getting reprimanded for doing the wrong thing. I haven’t seen such a great Robin and Superboy duo since Conner and Tim.

I really enjoyed this book which is collection of short stories / vignettes featuring the Super-family. The art work style continued to be bright and cheerful and the stories were full of cute moments which made me smile especially the relationship between Superman and his son. This book is in the tradition of Sunday morning cartoons - and as a fan of those - this hit just the right spot for me. However, if you are not a fan of Superman as a family man this collection will not be for you.
The are four stories in the collection with 2 gems, one good and one average. On a weighted average basis I therefore gave the entire book 4 stars. The breakup of the individual stories is as follows - warning spoilers ahead:
Our Town - aka the Kents go to the County fair
5 stars
A short and probably the cutest story of the bunch where the Superfamily takes a break and go to the fair together. Supes decides to take a break from crime fighting but still manages to get embroiled in stopping thieves at the fair much to the chargrin of Lois who wanted a night off. The story's focus is on the family - we gets games, Jon's teachers and a prize winning cow which made me smile.
I do wonder though if the reference to the movie was intentional? Or meant to invoked the idyllic country setting from the movie?
Escape from Dinosaur Island - aka Superman takes an adventure through a golden age Hollywood B-movie - aka Krypto gets eaten, blown up and fetches Jon on command; a cute dog training story
3 stars
This managed to evoke the old fashioned adventure stories from Hollywood's Golden Age ala Sindbad or swashbuckling fantasy adventures. The plot is definitely cheesey and campy but in a fun over-the-top way. Superman gets to beat up large dinos and generally try to escape from the "mysterious island. 3 stars - if only for the line “You ate my dog”. Don’t expect emotional stakes here but we did get Errol Flynn type character instead.
In the Name of the Father - aka Dawn of Justice: the Next Generation.
5 stars
Our titular story in which Robin / Damian kidnaps Superboy as the latter is a menace to society and needs to be contained. Damian (and don’t ask me how he is alive now - who know) is a really stabby chip of the Batman block. Supes doesn't take kindly to this plan leading to the best part of this book - Supes busting into the batcave all nuclear looking for his son.
Rest of the story is Batman and Superman trying to teach their kids to work together - yada yada. Cute shenanigans follow and the kids learn some dubious lesson. Alfred is great and snarky. Batman and Superman should have imparted this lesson on their movie counterparts instead but I'll take it in this lovely format instead.
Plus Damian has a BatCow ! 5 stars for the pets alone.
Super-Monster - aka Lois gets to have an adventure too.
2 stars
Special appearance from Frankenstein’s monster and his bride. Why you ask? Who knows? Who cares?
The b-side to our book with Frankenstien's monster looking to capture some evil alien who is hiding on earth. A fight happens and Superman saves the day. The end! This is a mostly silly adventure with not much in terms of giggles or cuteness. Not sure what it is doing in this collection but its not bad. Not much to write home about either.
I liked the design for the bride though; wish her hair resembled the iconic movie just a smidge more.

4 stars because there was Batman in this. He was tolerable. Clark and fam were great though, as per usual.

'Superman, Volume 2: Trial of the Super Sons' by Peter J. Tomasi is a series of stories about the domestic Superman, which is actually better than it sounds.
This new Superman is a husband and father. There are 4 different stories from Superman 7-13. Clark goes to the fair with his family and promises to stash the cape. This gets tricky when he discovers a plot to rob the ticket booths. Clark and Jon find themselves trapped on a strange island full of dinosaurs, and discover one the best cameo appearances of the year in comics, in my humble opinion. Jon is kidnapped by Damian Wayne and Bruce and Clark decide to try to get their boys to work together. Lois applies for a job at the local paper and gets involved in a marital feud between Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein.
I like this Superman a lot. Superman as a dad is such a good place for this character to be in. He's not a perfect father and he struggles like the rest of us. Jon is a pretty typical kid, while decidedly not being very typical. I loved the story with Damian and Jon. These four stories felt fairly complete. The writing is tight. The art is very solid.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
