went into this expecting / hoping for a critical analysis / history of the emergence of whiteness as a project? and there’s a Little of that history to be sure but what it ultimately delivered was a teleological narrative of how spain and the ottoman empire fumbled the bag and made the ascendancy of britain on the world stage and formation of the united states inevitable. 

horne is Clearly a us history guy and is constantly trying to reframe the events of the 16th century through that lens and it sucks to read. did make me realize what a blind spot the 16th century is for me though which i appreciated. gonna rectify that soon.

would have dnf-ed if i hadn’t been able to just power through the audiobook at work. am honestly reconsidering my stance on star ratings bc i so badly want to give this 1 star?  at one point he says one of queen elizabeth i’s political maneuvers was like a jiu jitsu move.

This book was an ambitious undertaking and at times seems to skip around in a way that is hard to follow but ultimately contains tons of good information and is worth the read.
