I got my first copy of this book on my birthday - mid March. I have finished it now, at the end of the month. We are 24% done with 2023, and I am fairly sure that this will be the best thing I read during it.

I went into this book grieving. I was confused, because I had no reason or right to grieve. I had not lost anyone recently, not to death or to a fractured friendship. But since I had started hearing Novak-Stolz be open in talking about her grief, I started to notice the grief that I had shut down over time.

And then, three days into the book, my grandmother died. Lazarus Rises was my anchor. I am not claiming that I understand a fraction of Novak-Stolz’s pain, but I am thankful for her sharing it. This is the first book I’ve ever read to make me cry - not just tear up, but cry.

There have been hard days, recently, nights where I can neither bring myself to cry nor sleep. And on those nights, I start at page one, and read aloud the words she wrote there as if a prayer for us both.
