Well that was hard.

First Dickens I’ve read in almost a decade and it feels like a gift, even if it’s not everyone’s favourite, it’s still a freakin Dickens!

The plot and characters only started making sense halfway through the book. Once there, the whole thing really picks up the pace.

I think the serialised structure and his inclination to jump between various story lines and characters made it difficult to get to grips w the story. It also felt like as a reader I had no idea where the plot was going until halfway. I did really love the final reveals and tie ins of backstory. That was done well, Mr Dickens

Interesting to learn the history of a period I'm unfamiliar with. Sydney Carton unexpected MVP. Mostly I'm just grateful to not live in A) the 1700s B) 1700s France

it’s got a little kick :,(

in all seriousness, i grew to love dickens’ prose. a few things i wasn’t a fan of in terms of kind of sort of (in my opinion) major events that were glossed over in a mere sentence or two, but the classics stay themselves! did not expect to cry. but alas. also, dickens describing nature??? what? please. want to live in his descriptions.

I very much enjoyed the ending third of this book. I quite liked the thrill and building of tension and I think the story was very well thought out. The setting was super cool. The first section of the story took me quite a while to get hooked and seemed to move very slowly but I think part of it is getting accustomed to the style of the time. Looking forward to trying out more classics.

Justice for my guy Sydney Carton. Sexy men don’t deserve death.
