Toni Morrison’s writing style is stunning — poetic and raw in the best way. But some parts were really tough to read, not because of the writing, but because they hit hard emotionally. That’s the point of this book though: it’s meant to challenge and confront you with the ugliness of external-turned-internal racism, classism and how societal standards influence self-worth.

This story will stick with me for a long time, as it forces the reader to reflect themselves in many ways. I had to reread the prologue (and the added note from Alice Hasters in the german edition) multiple times to really let the importance and significance of the book sink in.
If you’re planning to read this book, PLEASE make sure you READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS before reading!!!

(racial trauma, graphic sexual abuse, incest, animal killing, alcoholism, …)

✨ Thrifted ✨

What a harrowing story 🥺 Pecola did not deserve any of the difficulties she went through.
I am so horrified that Cholly raped her! I got incredibly choked up reading through the ‘Spring’ part 😫

I found the writing bitty and hard to get through at times, so I had to put it down every now and then.
3.5 out of 5 stars for me, thank you ✨

A hard read in terms of the content warnings I tagged. I’m glad I pushed through.
