After letting you call in love with all these parents and children Moriarty rocks your world when she reveals who was murdered and how it happened. I only wish she hadn't ruined it by trying to make the ending to happy. It was dark content matter and it would have been ok to stay dark to the last page.
This book has some pretty heavy triggers in it. Worth checking out if they will bother you, but for anyone who isn't set off by them I'd say this is a worthwhile read.

I honestly really love this book. I can’t put my finger on what keeps it from 5 stars other than maybe the fact that it’s a familiar story due to its impeccably faithful series adaptation. Even so, if I were to read the book prior to experiencing the show, I’m not sure it would have been a 5-star read for me. The writing is clear and succinct in a way despite the novel being so long. Empathy for the characters is built within such short, pointed passages and it all feels very true to life - moving quickly but still leaving impact on the lives lived. Madeline is delightful and a friend I think anyone would wish for and the ensemble cast beyond her are lovable in their own ways. I also felt a great deal more impact from the peak of the climax than I imagined I would having already known the outcome. These characters are a satirization but they still feel reminiscent of the types of people you know so that moment - seeing that change in demeanor - just had so much more grip than I imagined it would.

It appears I have nothing to complain about so it’s unfortunate to say that despite this being such a fun read and I enjoyed my time, it doesn’t feel like a story I’ll return to.
